School visits provide great opportunities for children to learn that regular people make books.
The slide show and drawing presentation is
humorous and instructive welcoming interaction and questions. I enjoy showing the connections between my life, art and picture books
(including the "painting of shame" in Uncle Nacho's Hat that I should have redone but didn't). Students
are amazed to hear that a picture book often takes 6 months
to a year to make because of the importance of redrawing images many times over
until they are the best they can be, and that the story is also often rewritten
or edited many, many times until it too is just right. This shows the importance
of making mistakes and learning from them. As an illustrator and educator
I value being able to share techniques and stories related to the creative
process in making art, overcoming difficulties and solving all sorts
of problems. Visiting schools allows me to have a lot of fun inspiring, encouraging, and entertaining children and teachers.
Presentations include school assemblies, class workshops, and professional in-services for teachers.
Getting the most out of a school visit.
Having students read and discuss the books ahead of time is tremendously helpful in giving students an opportunity to ask specific, related questions which they can learn from. Many lessons can be created around a school visit. My fun teacher's activities page has creative activities based on each of my books.
